Interview with Lutz Leonhardt, new Head of Logistics, Assembly and Service

NILES-SIMMONS:<\/span><\/strong> Hello Lutz, thank you very much for taking the time to talk briefly about yours\u00adelf and your posi\u00adtion in our com\u00adpany. Let\u2019s start in a very clas\u00adsi\u00adcal way about yours\u00adelf: What was your career before NILES-SIMMONS?<\/p>\n

Leon\u00adhardt<\/span><\/strong>: Thank you. I star\u00adted by stu\u00addy\u00ading mecha\u00adni\u00adcal engi\u00adnee\u00adring at Chem\u00adnitz Tech\u00adni\u00adcal Uni\u00adver\u00adsity, which I com\u00adple\u00adted in 1992. My car\u00adrier star\u00adted as a ser\u00advice engi\u00adneer at MAN Pla\u00admag in Plauen, a prin\u00adting machine manu\u00adfac\u00adtu\u00adrer. After 5 years I chan\u00adged to the order pro\u00adces\u00adsing depart\u00adment and with that the range of duties expan\u00added of course \u2013 via logi\u00adstics and purcha\u00adsing. Unfort\u00adu\u00adna\u00adtely, I also had to expe\u00adri\u00adence an insol\u00advency, which I hel\u00adped to handle. This also invol\u00adved making a lot of peo\u00adple red\u00adun\u00addant, which really takes its toll. Espe\u00adci\u00adally when you have to fire your clo\u00adsest confidants.
\nUnfort\u00adu\u00adna\u00adtely, after that there was no attrac\u00adtive offer in the imme\u00addiate vici\u00adnity, so I accepted one from Augs\u00adburg at the com\u00adpany Manroland.<\/p>\n

NILES-SIMMONS<\/span><\/strong>: But that also meant fur\u00adther away from your family and a com\u00adple\u00adtely new area of respon\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adlity for you.<\/p>\n

Leon\u00adhardt<\/span>: <\/strong>Yes, tha\u00adt\u2019s both true. My family lives in Sax\u00adony and my area of respon\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adlity was now in eCom\u00admerce. This sec\u00adtion  was to be fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtally rebuilt and I then took on the posi\u00adtion as head of the online shop for spare and wear parts. Since I had\u00adn\u2019t had much to do with online shops until then, I thought about it for a long time \u2013 but then accepted because of the very exci\u00adting position.<\/p>\n

NILES-SIMMONS<\/span><\/strong>: An online shop for repla\u00adce\u00adment and clo\u00adsure parts also depends on the pro\u00adducts and their avai\u00adla\u00adbi\u00adlity. This clo\u00adses the cir\u00adcle to your pre\u00advious career.<\/p>\n

Leon\u00adhardt<\/span>: <\/strong>Abso\u00adlut\u00adely \u2013 and these are exactly the topics I also addres\u00adsed. It quickly became appa\u00adrent that, in addi\u00adtion to impro\u00adving mar\u00adke\u00adting and shop func\u00adtions, the avai\u00adla\u00adbi\u00adlity of parts also had to be increased by means of stock\u00adpi\u00adling. Of course, this also included fur\u00adther deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment of the usage pro\u00adper\u00adties of spare and wear parts in order to stand out from the com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adtion, which was also visi\u00adble in the form of pro\u00adduct piracy.<\/p>\n

 NILES-SIMMONS<\/span><\/strong>: Were you able to bring back ser\u00advice business?<\/p>\n

Leon\u00adhardt<\/span><\/strong>: The tur\u00adno\u00adver in the online area of the ser\u00advice was increased from 5 to 15 mil\u00adlion EUR per year. And that was just the begin\u00adning and the dis\u00adcer\u00adni\u00adble poten\u00adtial was huge. The cus\u00adto\u00admers told us what they nee\u00added and we expe\u00adri\u00admen\u00adted a lot. Little by little, I built up my own micro\u00adc\u00adosm in the field of eCom\u00admerce. This included our own purcha\u00adsing depart\u00adment, because it could react fas\u00adter, our own logi\u00adstics and our own dispo.<\/p>\n

NILES-SIMMONS<\/span><\/strong>: So how did you go from the online world back into the glo\u00adbal sup\u00adply chain?<\/p>\n

Leon\u00adhardt:<\/span><\/strong> (laughs) It\u2019s <\/em>very simple: A new mana\u00adging direc\u00adtor arri\u00adved and he said, if it works for the online shop, why can\u2019t I do it for the whole com\u00adpany? I thought about it again for a long time, but in the end I deci\u00added to do it because it was once again a nice challenge.<\/p>\n

NILES-SIMMONS:<\/span><\/strong> You have been with NILES-SIMMONS for over a year now. How did the change to Chem\u00adnitz come about?<\/p>\n

Leon\u00adhardt<\/span><\/strong>: I got an offer from you. The nice thing about this offer was that I am close to my family again. The work in Augs\u00adburg was great, but the family life suf\u00adfe\u00adred a lot. Tha\u00adt\u2019s why I deci\u00added to go to Chem\u00adnitz and work for NILES-SIMMONS.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

NILES-SIMMONS<\/span><\/strong>: We hope you have been able to settle in well in your three areas of ser\u00advice, assem\u00adbly and logi\u00adstics. The logi\u00adstics area was not ori\u00adgi\u00adnally inten\u00added for you. How did you come to be in charge of all 3 areas?<\/p>\n

Lutz Leon\u00adhardt<\/span>: <\/strong>Based on my pre\u00advious expe\u00adri\u00adence, it was clear to me that for good ser\u00advice and good assem\u00adbly, you also need good logi\u00adstics \u2013 you can no lon\u00adger sepa\u00adrate it. And for the logi\u00adstics area, NILES-SIMMONS was also loo\u00adking for a new oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity to build up the area at that time. This fit\u00adted in quite well with the views of the manage\u00adment and with mine that I should take over the logi\u00adstics area too.<\/p>\n

By the way, I have alre\u00adady sett\u00adled in very well. I have met and I am still mee\u00adting many great peo\u00adple who are open to what I want to change. Col\u00adle\u00adagues who are also wil\u00adling and open to new goals and it\u2019s great to see how col\u00adle\u00adagues are pul\u00adling along. We can only achieve change tog\u00ade\u00adther and ever\u00adyone can con\u00adtri\u00adbute with their ideas and experience.<\/p>\n

I like the \u00bbwe\u00ab fee\u00adling and the heart and soul that is evi\u00addent ever\u00ady\u00adwhere. You can feel the team spi\u00adrit very well and I abso\u00adlut\u00adely feel like a team player.<\/p>\n

NILES-SIMMONS:<\/span><\/strong> What has alre\u00adady chan\u00adged since you took over the areas of ser\u00advice, assem\u00adbly and logistics?<\/p>\n

Leon\u00adhardt:<\/span><\/strong> It was par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlarly important to me that my col\u00adle\u00adagues notice that some\u00adthing is chan\u00adging for the bet\u00adter. That is always important for moti\u00adva\u00adtion when you address new things, that some\u00adthing hap\u00adpens as soon as pos\u00adsi\u00adble. In addi\u00adtion to regu\u00adlar mee\u00adtings and adapted pro\u00adces\u00adses, I think we have also mana\u00adged to adapt the mind\u00adset I men\u00adtio\u00adned. Away from \u00bbit\u2019s always been like this\u00ab to \u00bbhow can we help the cus\u00adto\u00admer quickly, effi\u00adci\u00adently and on a long term basis\u00ab.<\/p>\n

We have alre\u00adady imple\u00admen\u00adted various mea\u00adsu\u00adres regar\u00adding order and cle\u00adan\u00adli\u00adness in the assem\u00adbly and logi\u00adstics areas. We are also inves\u00adt\u00ading in pre\u00admi\u00adses and equip\u00adment to improve pro\u00adces\u00adses and working con\u00addi\u00adti\u00adons. For exam\u00adple, the the sec\u00adtion for the assem\u00adbly of tur\u00adning-mil\u00adling units  was com\u00adple\u00adtely refur\u00adbis\u00adhed in order to  fur\u00adther ensure very high com\u00adpo\u00adnent qua\u00adlity and to pro\u00advide employees with a plea\u00adsant working environment.<\/p>\n

And this is to con\u00adti\u00adnue. Among other things, we will improve the office situa\u00adtion for our Ser\u00advice Solu\u00adti\u00adons team in the near future too.<\/p>\n

Of course, we still have to adapt our pro\u00adces\u00adses to the needs of our cus\u00adto\u00admers and that will cer\u00adtainly take some time, but we are on a really good way.<\/p>\n

NILES-SIMMONS<\/span><\/strong>: Since you have alre\u00adady men\u00adtio\u00adned the out\u00adlook, what is your goal for the future at NILES-SIMMONS? What would you like to achieve or make happen?<\/p>\n

Leon\u00adhardt:<\/span><\/strong> I think the big\u00adgest chall\u00adenge will be to main\u00adtain the cur\u00adrent focus and com\u00admit\u00adment over the coming months and years and to con\u00adti\u00adnue to deve\u00adlop. The clear goal is to become a ser\u00advice-ori\u00aden\u00adted com\u00adpany \u2013 \u00bbCus\u00adto\u00admers for life\u00ab \u2013 and to streng\u00adthen and shape this idea among the employees in my team and in all other teams of the company.<\/p>\n

As machi\u00adnes become more and more inter\u00adch\u00adan\u00adgeable, ser\u00advice beco\u00admes more and more important to stand out, to dif\u00adfe\u00adren\u00adtiate and of course to streng\u00adthen cus\u00adto\u00admer loyalty.<\/p>\n

Through regu\u00adlar cus\u00adto\u00admer visits, we reco\u00adgnize the great poten\u00adtial. Our cus\u00adto\u00admers are asking more inten\u00adsi\u00advely for various ser\u00advices and we are recor\u00adding a con\u00adstant increase in our ser\u00advice reve\u00adnues. I am very gra\u00adteful that the manage\u00adment shares these ideas and sup\u00adports the neces\u00adsary changes.<\/p>\n

We also want to drive for\u00adward digi\u00adtal busi\u00adness models in ser\u00advice and deve\u00adlop new ones, whe\u00adther pre\u00addic\u00adtive main\u00adten\u00adance or con\u00addi\u00adtion monitoring.<\/p>\n

We would also like to fur\u00adther improve ser\u00advice avai\u00adla\u00adbi\u00adlity and respon\u00adsi\u00adve\u00adness accor\u00adding to 24\/7.<\/p>\n

The topic of employee trai\u00adning is also par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlarly close to my heart. We will dis\u00adtri\u00adbute the know-how of our employees among seve\u00adral heads through con\u00adti\u00adnuous trai\u00adning in order to move away from sin\u00adgle sources and to offer our employees the oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity for fur\u00adther deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment. Of course, this is a leng\u00adthy and dif\u00adfi\u00adcult pro\u00adcess, but there is no alternative.<\/p>\n

Over\u00adall, howe\u00adver, we have alre\u00adady been able to achieve a lot, which is also con\u00adfirmed by our cus\u00adto\u00admers.
